4 Steps to Change a Life Today

Choices

Every moment of life offers us an abundance of choices. Choices matter, and not only to ourselves. No other creature, plant or mineral has the choices that we have as humans. Whichever side of the bed we wake up on, each day is full of choices of how we will interact with and affect the lives of others.

Lost and Alone

I was traveling by train from Santiago to Los Angeles, Chile. For six hours I vigilantly watched out the window for the placard designating the next leg of my journey. Finally I saw the sign I had been looking for, “San Rosendo”. I had been told that there I would find a bus to Los Angeles. With 25 kilos of luggage in hand I searched the whole area but found no bus.

I was alone, confused and exhausted. My choppy broken Spanish was not proving helpful. I kept saying “bus”. (Later I learned that there were no buses at that station, only more trains).

Rescued by a stranger

Alone but surrounded by hundreds of people, I suddenly felt two hands slam down on my shoulders from behind. I never saw his face, but this unknown man firmly grabbed my shoulders and forcibly pushed me. He pushed me and wound me through the maze of bustling travelers. He then let me go as I saw the placard for a ‘train’ to Los Angeles.

As a stranger all alone in a foreign country, I will forever be grateful for this mentor who in just a few moments impacted my life forever. He was gone in an instant. To me, his hands were the hands of the Lord, answering my prayer for sure guidance.

Steps to take today

  1. Make a space in your heart to feel where there is a need.
  2. Begin each day with a determination to recognize that need.
  3. Step out of your comfort zone.
  4. Take courage to act. Change a life today.

Life needs you!

No matter what our own circumstances, we still can serve abundantly. Dr. Viktor Frankl describes his observations under conditions of brutal captivity, “It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us…. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.”
Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

No matter how well we plan we cannot on our own foresee every person or circumstance we will interact with on a given day. Opportunities abound; watch for them
